Smith & Wesson 340 Information

Smith & Wesson caused a real sensation in the field of revolvers in 2001 with introduction of the Scandium revolver range. This metal was discovered in 1879 by the Swedish chemist Lars Nilson. He found a way of isolating the scandium from the mineral euxenite. This mineral was most prevalent in Scandinavia, hence the name Scandium. This is an extremely scare metal, for 100 tons of euxenite is required to produce just 500g of scandium. The market price of scandium is currently around $1600 per 100g. In 1971, a large supply of scandium was found in the Ukraine. Russian scientists discovered that aluminum became much stronger if a small amount of scandium was added. Alloys containing scandium are far more durable, and have a very high resistance to pressure. The Russians have a incorporated this new material in their new Migfighter planes and in space travel. After the fall of the Iron curtain, this material became available in the west. In 1999, Smith & Wesson introduced a number of Airlite Titanium revolver models. When the designers became aware of this new scandium, the company introduced a totally new Scandium revolver series in 2001. The first revolver of this new type was the double-action Model 340 Airlite Scandium. This 5-shot weapon in the caliber .357 Magnum has a J-frame and a barrel length of 48 mm (2 in). The total length is 160 mm (6 ΒΌ in) and this small revolver weights 340 g (12oz). The frame, the cylinder arm and the barrel shroud are made of light metal, strengthened with scandium. The cylinder is manufactured of titanium. The frame has a 'stainless look' and the cylinder is grey in color. In addition, this weapon has a concealed hammer and a Hogue Bantam grip. Model 340 Airlite Scandium Personal Defense 2001- the dimensions and the caliber of this revolver are identical to that of the previous scandium Model 340. The only difference is the appearance. This weapon has a mat black frame and a dark grey cylinder.
