This is a 5-shot stainless steel, double-action-only revolver that came onto the market in 1985. Since 1988 this revolver was named the Model 649-1 due to the modification of the cylinder arm. The model 649-2 was introduced in 1990. The steel hardening process was especially modified for this model. This weapon was also given a wider sight opening. In 1997 Amith & Wesson changed the caliber of the .38 Special to the .357 Magnum and changed the barrel length from 51 mm (2 in) to 54 mm ( 2 ½ in). This weapon has a total length of 166 mm (6 9/16 in) and it weighs 652 g (23 oz). Both types are shown in the illustration. This revolver is still being produced in .357 Magnum caliber
