This 6-shot stainless revolver in .41 Magnum caliber originates from 1986 and has a 152 mm (6in) barrel and is still in production. This weapon has an adjustable rear sight, and was originally manufactured with 102 mm (4 in), 152 mm (6 in) or 213 mm (8 ½ in) barrels. In 1988, the version with the 102 mm (4 in) barrel was discontinued, followed by the 213 mm (8 ½ in) barrel in 1993. A special version was released as the Model 657 Magnum Classic Hunter in 1991 with a 165 mm (6 ½ in) barrel, a continuous ejector shroud and a solid round cylinder. Modifications made to the Model 657 are:
1988: Model 657-1, modification of the cylinder arm
1990: Model 657-2, enlarging of the cylinder stop grooves
1994: Model 657-3, changes to the rear sight, the ejector star and the adoption of the rubber Hogue grip
In 2001, Smith & Wesson introduced a version with a 191 mm (7 ½ in) barrel. This 6-shot stainless steel weapon has a continuous ejector shroud, a solid cylinder and a rubber Hogue combat grip. The total length is 302 mm (11 in) and this weapon weighs 1474 g (52 oz.).
