Smith & Wesson Model 29 Information

The Dirty Harry movies have made this the most well know Smith & Wesson revolver. The weapon, even when shot from the hip, could bring a down a sprinting crook from a 100 yards. Normal mortals shoot less accurately, but even so, the Model 29 is a target revolver of the highest order. This 6-shot weapon is manufactured with 102 mm (4 in), 165mm (6 ½ in) or 213 mm (8 ½ in) barrels. As of 1979, a 152 mm (6 in) barrel replaced the 165 mm (6 ½ in) barrel. This revolver has an adjustable rear sight, counter-bored cylinder chambers and a large walnut grip. This weapon was originally simply called the Model .44 Magnum, but was given the model number 29 in 1957. At its introductions in 1955, this weapon's model number started with the letter S, but was replaced in 1969 by the letter N. Over the years, the Model 29 has been manufactured in a number of special versions for a variety of clients. The most prominent are:
Model 29 Silhouette, a special long distance weapon with a 270 mm (10 5/8 in) barrel and an adjustable front sight for four different distances. This type was manufactured from 1983 until 1991
Model 29 Classic Hunter, manufactured in 1987 with a 6-shot solid round cylinder and a 152 mm (6 in) barrel with continuous ejector shroud. A number of the 5000 weapons had an adjustable front sight
Model 29 Magnum Classic, this type was only manufactured in 1990 and had a 191 mm (7 ½ in) barrel with a continuous ejector shroud
Model 29 .44 Classic, manufactured from 1991 up to and including 1994 with a 127 mm (5 in), 165 mm (6 ½ in) or 213 mm (8 ½ in) barrel with a continuous ejector shroud.
