The N-frame of Smith & Wesson is based on the old Hand Ejector New Century Triple Lock models of 1907, 1915 and 1926. These were large heavy revolvers for the calibers .44 S&W, 40-44 Win, and .45 S&W Special together with a range of other ammunition types that are hardly used nowadays, if at all. The authentic N- frame was developed around 1930 for the .38/44 Heavy Duty and the .38/44 Outdoorsman revolvers. The .38/14 was an enhanced .38 Special cartridge, also known as the .38 Super Police. The .38/44 Outdoorsman remained in production until 1966.
