The revolver originally came out in the early 1952s as the Centennial model, renamed to the Model 40 in 1957 and discontinued in 1974. The Model 40 is available in .38 with a five shots and is a double-action-only shooter. It is often called also as the "lemon squeezer" due to its grip safety. It is a snub-nose revolver with a barrel length of 1 7/8", an overall length of 6 5/16" and weighs just 595 g. The revolver contains a steel frame, fully concealed hammer, wooden grips, with a grip safety and an old-style thumb piece to enable firing a revolver with cocking the hammer. In 2007, the Smith & Wesson reintroduced this model as a collector's piece, with an enhanced model featuring a case hardened finish finish. Limited edition (20 pieces) of this outstanding model is covered with Class "A" engraving, surrounded with gold borders. The Model 40 belongs to one of the quickest and simplest models to be used from all of the J-frame revolvers. Thanks to its firepower and excellent accuracy it became a popular choice for law enforcement and a personal defense use, finding its way as a back-up gun or as a pocket concealed carry gun. Small snubbies became icons in the gun world.
