This is the stainless steel version of Model 29 and was introduced in 1978. The first series 6-shot double-action revolvers had only 152 mm (6 in) barrel. In 1981, the barrel lengths of 102 mm (4 in) and 213 mm (8 ½ in) were added. This weapon had counter-bored cylinder chambers until 1982. A number of different model types of this model have been brought onto the market. The most prominent are:
Model 629 Classic Stainless with a 127 mm (5 in), 152 mm (6 in) or 213 mm (8 ½ in) barrel with a continuous ejector shroud. This version has been in production since 1990
Model 629 Classic DX Stainless with a 165 mm ( 6 ½ in) or 213 mm ( 8 ½ in) barrel and continuous ejector shroud. This model originates from 1991 and is still manufactured by Smith & Wesson
Model 629 Mountain Gun from 1993 with a 102 mm (4 in) standard barrel. This weapon was developed as a "backpacker" for travelers who wanted to protect themselves from predators on two or for legs.
Model 629 has had following modifications over the years:
1982: Model 629-1 discontinuing of the counter-bored cylinder chambers and barrel retaining pin
1988: Model 629 – 2, modification of the trigger mechanism
1990: Model 629 – 3, enlarging of the cylinder stop grooves in the cylinder
1994: Model 629 – 4, changes to the rear sight, the ejector star and the adoption of the rubber Hogue grip.
